Kino Metropol Chemnitz

The imposing Chemnitz METROPOL theatre was built in 1913 as a variety theatre, hotel and restaurant according to plans by Chemnitz architect Wenzel Bürger.

The architecture is reminiscent of ancient temples and incorporates elements of historicism (baroque, classicism) and art nouveau. In September 1913, the national press wrote: "Germany has thus gained one of the most beautiful theatres dedicated to the lightest of the muses, the cabaret!"

From the early 1930s, the METROPOL was converted into a cinema and has remained so to this day, despite the damage caused by the bombing of Chemnitz in 1945.

Maret Wolff has been running the METROPOL cinema since 2016 and has received several awards for her programme. Time and time again, she has also drawn on past vaudeville times and offers other genres the opportunity to perform in this historic building.

Whether state and national poetry slam competitions, live concerts, staff meetings or product presentations by local companies such as Staffbase, Freie Presse, Hörmann and Klinikum Chemnitz, special events as part of World Alzheimer's Day, the awarding of the Golden Agnes, a Pecha Kucha evening by the Association of Architects, TV recordings for Pro 7 or other different formats - the venue has seen a lot under her management and is always happy to welcome new partners and organisers.

The METROPOL cinema is a one-screen venue with various adjoining rooms and a large cinema auditorium with a parquet floor and, since 2023, a newly designed gallery.
